A Massachusetts judge at the center of a years-long scandal involving an illegal immigrant is now facing a misconduct hearing that could end her career on the bench.
Judge Shelley M. Richmond Joseph, once a respected figure in the Massachusetts judicial system, is accused of helping an illegal immigrant slip out of a Boston-area courthouse through a back door in 2018 to avoid capture by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The man she allegedly assisted, Jose Medina-Perez, had already been deported twice and was barred from reentering the United States until 2027.
According to reports, Medina-Perez appeared in Newton District Court on drug possession charges and a fugitive warrant from Pennsylvania. Waiting just outside the courthouse was an ICE agent prepared to take him into custody. But that never happened.
Joseph, who was suspended without pay shortly after the incident, now faces a formal misconduct hearing before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. She’s barred from presiding over cases until a final decision is reached.
