Vice President J.D. Vance made headlines again Tuesday night after dropping an unexpected zinger at a high-profile event in Washington, D.C. Hosted by American Compass, a conservative policy think tank, the evening took a colorful turn when Vance responded with biting humor to being introduced as an “intellectual”—a label he didn’t take kindly to.
The exchange occurred during a formal black-tie affair, where American Compass founder Oren Cass interviewed Vance on stage. In his introduction, Cass praised Vance’s former writing work at National Review and described him as an intellectual “in the good sense of the term.”
Vance didn’t hold back in his response: “I come here and you insult me,” he quipped. “And you call me ‘an intellectual,’ remind me that I wrote for the National Review. What an asshole this guy is!” The audience erupted in laughter and applause as the moment instantly became the talk of the evening.
Cass took the jab in stride and fired back humorously, saying, “That’s fair. I will admit that I, too, wrote for National Review.”
