With the election of its first Republican mayor in more than a century, historic Charleston, South Carolina, has undergone a political upheaval. William Cogswell, a state representative, is expected to head the city in the future.
The moment the votes closed on Tuesday night, Cogswell was pronounced the winner of the mayoral contest by the local media. Unofficial runoff totals show that Cogswell has 51.04% of the vote, while incumbent Mayor John Tecklenburg is trailing behind with 48.96% after all 91 precincts have reported. With Cogswell’s lead, they have a good chance of winning the election.

During his triumphal address, the incoming mayor urged solidarity and declared his intention to secure the votes of those who chose to back his rival. “Ladies and gentlemen, I can confidently say I am going to be the next mayor of the city of Charleston,” Cogswell announced.
“The people have spoken and we’re ready, we’re ready for a new direction. A new direction that’s smart, safe and sound,” Before mentioning a recurring campaign slogan of “smart, safe, and sound,” Cogswell said.
“A new direction that puts our citizens and residents first.” He went on, getting applause from the crowd. “And a new direction that puts labels aside so that we can find pragmatic solutions to our problems. I am humbled by the results, no doubt. I am excited about the future of our city. And I have to say thank you, thank you, thank you to all the supporters and all the voters that are out there that have expressed their confidence in me.”
