Now, according to reports, the pair have been hit with assault and robbery charges as the search continues for other members of the gang who fled the scene.
“The 15-year-old boy and girl, both from Maryland, were arraigned on the additional charges on Thursday after the bloody attack on Edward Coristine served as the catalyst for President Trump’s crackdown in the nation’s capital,” the New York Post reported.
Authorities say the two suspects were caught near the scene, but several others remain on the run. Because of their age, the teens have not been publicly identified.
“The pair, who had already been charged with unarmed carjacking, are now also facing assault and robbery charges, Politico reported,” one outlet confirmed.
The attack pushed President Trump to take unprecedented steps to restore safety in the capital.
“Following the incident, President Trump declared an emergency in the capital and initiated his federal takeover of the police and deployment of federal agents and National Guard troops around the capital,” outlets reported at the time.
Trump’s decision came on August 11, and since then, residents say they’ve seen a dramatic change. The presence of federal forces has discouraged violent gangs and cleaned up drug-infested areas that locals say had been ignored for too long.
“Since taking these actions on August 11, law-abiding citizens can now walk around the capital freely without fear of being attacked and robbed by rogue teens or harassed by drugged-out bums,” one report noted.
The two teens now face the possibility of serious jail time, while police continue hunting down the rest of the suspects. Many residents are hoping this marks the start of real accountability for the crime wave that’s rocked D.C. under soft-on-crime policies.
