The U.S. Army announced a major policy shift on Friday, halting acceptance of transgender recruits and suspending gender transition-related medical procedures for service members. The directive, issued by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, marks a sharp departure from previous military policies.
The Army confirmed the policy on X, stating: “The #USArmy will no longer allow transgender individuals to join the military and will stop performing or facilitating procedures associated with gender transition for service members.” Effective immediately, individuals with a history of gender dysphoria are barred from enlistment, and all planned or pending transition-related medical procedures are paused.

Despite the changes, the Army emphasized that current service members would be treated with respect: “Individuals with gender dysphoria have volunteered to serve our country and will be treated with dignity and respect.”
