“An armed suspect identified as Jeanine John Taele, 38, was arrested at Trump National Golf Course after allegedly monitoring security preparations ahead of President Trump’s visit, authorities said,” Fox News reported.
The investigation took an even more serious turn when deputies discovered ammunition on Taele and then searched his vehicle.
“Police said they later recovered an illegally-modified AR-style rifle, body armor, high-capacity magazines, ammunition and notebooks containing “concerning statements” from his home,” Fox News reported.
Federal prosecutors later provided additional details about the events leading up to the arrest. According to an affidavit, agents first encountered Taele during a security assessment on July 31. He was reportedly wearing an earpiece, walking throughout the course and recording federal agents involved in security planning.
Taele subsequently left the property but returned on August 2.
Authorities said he approached federal agents and claimed that he worked for the State Department and was present as part of a security detail. He also allegedly acknowledged that he had a loaded firearm inside his vehicle, which was parked at the golf club.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the male suspect, identified as 38-year-old Jeanine Taele, was observed walking around the golf course, taking photos and monitoring the security plans.
“On Sunday, August 2, 2026, at approximately 3:28 p.m., deputies assigned to the Lomita Sheriff’s Station responded to Trump National Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes after plain clothes Federal agents reported a suspicious individual on the property. The individual was observed walking throughout the golf course grounds taking photographs and videos and appearing to monitor security-planning activities,” the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a press release.
Deputies detained Taele after learning that he was also being sought in connection with a robbery investigation conducted by the El Segundo Police Department.
“Lomita Sheriff’s deputies contacted the individual, an adult male identified as 38-year-old Jeanine John Taele from Downey, and determined he was being investigated for robbery by the El Segundo Police Department. Deputies detained Taele and located his vehicle in a parking lot on the golf course. During the detention, deputies recovered a 16-round magazine containing hollow point ammunition from Taele’s pants pocket. Deputies subsequently searched Taele’s vehicle and recovered a loaded pistol with a round chambered, along with an additional loaded magazine containing hollow point ammunition,” LASD said.
The federal complaint says investigators found a loaded 9mm pistol, hollow-point ammunition, binoculars and a badge bearing the words “security protection agent” inside Taele’s pickup truck.
The investigation did not stop at the golf course.
Authorities searched Taele’s Downey residence on August 3 and reported finding an illegally modified AR-platform rifle, additional firearms, body armor, high-capacity magazines, ammunition, an earpiece, two radio signal devices and notebooks containing what investigators described as “concerning statements.” Officials have not publicly released the contents of those notebooks.
Taele was initially arrested on state firearms-related charges, including carrying a concealed firearm and possession of prohibited ammunition. He also faces charges connected to a separate robbery case.
The federal case has now added another major development.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Taele is charged in a federal criminal complaint with possession of an unregistered short-barreled rifle. The federal offense carries a statutory maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli emphasized the importance of stopping the situation before Trump arrived.
“While we are still investigating the motives of this individual, we are thankful he was apprehended before the President’s visit,” said First Assistant United States Attorney Bill Essayli. “Federal and local law enforcement stepped in early and prevented what could have been a dangerous situation from occurring. This investigation remains ongoing.”
FBI officials also stressed that the circumstances demanded a serious response, particularly given the history of attacks targeting Trump.
“There is no room for error, particularly in light of previous attempts on President Trump’s life, and the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, working with our partners at the U.S. Secret Service, the ATF, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, will investigate this case thoroughly.”
The investigation is being handled jointly by the FBI, Secret Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Trump ultimately arrived in Southern California for the planned RNC event on Tuesday, August 4.
Authorities have not announced that Taele had a specific plan to attack the president, and the federal complaint contains allegations rather than findings of guilt. The Justice Department explicitly notes that Taele is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
Still, the circumstances surrounding the arrest have placed renewed attention on the extraordinary security challenges facing the president. A man allegedly photographing security activity, carrying ammunition, claiming to be part of a government security detail and later found connected to a cache of firearms and protective equipment was intercepted before Trump arrived.
For federal and local authorities, that early intervention may have been the most important development of all.
The investigation remains ongoing, and Taele is expected to appear in federal court in Los Angeles following his transfer to federal custody.
