In a revealing phone call on September 10, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes confessed to both Governor Katie Hobbs and Secretary of State Adrian Fontes that the individuals currently facing prosecution for questioning the 2020 election results did nothing wrong. This stunning admission comes as Mayes continues her efforts to prosecute 18 individuals, including high-profile figures such as former Trump Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. These defendants were charged for contesting the legitimacy of the 2020 election and offering an alternative slate of electors for Donald Trump.
In April, Mayes and her team brought forth these charges, attempting to target key Trump allies. Among those indicted were RNC attorney Christina Bobb, attorney John Eastman, and Trump campaign advisor Boris Epshteyn. The charges aimed to criminalize their efforts to challenge what they believe was a stolen election. However, cracks in the case have begun to show as it becomes increasingly clear that the charges might be politically motivated. A judge recently allowed the defense to argue this very point, signaling that the case is already on shaky ground.

The indictment against these individuals includes serious accusations of conspiracy, fraudulent schemes, and forgery. According to Mayes, “Defendants and unindicted coconspirators schemed to prevent the lawful transfer of the presidency.” This statement, coupled with allegations of deceit against Arizona voters, forms the backbone of her case. The prosecution claims the defendants intended to manipulate the process by submitting false votes for Trump, hoping Vice President Mike Pence would reject the Biden-Harris votes on January 6, 2021.
