The heart of Queens is once again under siege. In the shadow of the 7 train, the infamous Roosevelt Avenue has returned to its lawless, chaotic state—and it’s happening right under the nose of Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Stroll down this stretch of Queens, and it feels more like a lawless marketplace than a New York City neighborhood. Sex workers line the sidewalks with bold confidence, while vendors casually sell grilled meat, knockoff electronics, and what appear to be stolen goods—all in broad daylight. It’s become a symbol of the utter failure of city leadership to maintain law and order.
Locals say they’re exhausted and furious. They’ve made countless pleas to Ocasio-Cortez and Congresswoman Grace Meng, but those cries have seemingly fallen on deaf ears. The area has earned the nickname “Avenue of the Sweethearts,” a sarcastic moniker reflecting its Red Light District-like reputation.
“All the criminal activity has reverted to the way it was last year,” said Ramses Frias, a local Republican activist and City Council candidate. “Our residents feel like prisoners in their own homes while criminals walk freely, preying on helpless victims.”
