It was supposed to be a controlled town hall event packed with allies, but Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) found herself on the defensive Thursday night in Queens—facing both a hostile crowd and a mounting legal controversy that could derail her political ambitions.

The event, held in Jackson Heights and billed as a forum to discuss the impact of the Trump administration’s budget priorities, quickly spun out of control. AOC, who expected the audience to cheer her every word, instead faced sharp backlash from someone she thought was once on her side.

Right as she launched into her PowerPoint presentation on federal budget cuts, a woman in the crowd stood up and began shouting.
“I am a healthcare worker and I want to know what you’re doing about the genocide in Gaza!” the woman yelled, cutting through the congresswoman’s carefully planned message.
