Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has once again thrown fuel on the fire of global instability—this time by outright rejecting a proposed Victory Day ceasefire from Russia, delivering an ominous warning to foreign leaders planning to attend the May 9 event in Moscow.

In what many are calling a reckless move, Zelensky made it clear over the weekend that Ukraine “cannot guarantee the safety” of dignitaries attending Russia’s World War II Victory Day celebrations, a date already saturated with historical tension. But what makes this announcement even more volatile is the company those leaders will be keeping: Vladimir Putin and a host of Kremlin-aligned allies eager to project power on the world stage.

Zelensky’s rejection of the truce was anything but diplomatic. Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, he mocked Russia’s gesture as little more than political theater.
“It is impossible to build any plan for the next steps to end the war in two or three days. And so, it just doesn’t look very serious… It’s more of a theatrical production on his part,” Zelensky said, according to Interfax-Ukraine.
