The American public is sending Democrats a message loud and clear — stop the political games and reopen the government.
A new Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll has revealed that the overwhelming majority of Americans have grown weary of the ongoing government shutdown, now dragging into its sixth day. And the blame? Voters are pointing squarely at Democrats.
Voters Overwhelmingly Oppose the Shutdown
According to the survey released Monday, 70 percent of voters oppose the shutdown, while just 30 percent support it. The message is unmistakable — Americans want Washington back to work.
But it’s not just frustration driving these numbers. The poll also shows that voters overwhelmingly side with the GOP’s plan to keep the government open. A striking 65 percent of respondents said Democrats should accept a continuing resolution to fund the government at current levels without demanding more money for the Affordable Care Act. Only 35 percent believe Democrats should continue their standoff.
GOP Seen as Winning the Battle
Despite Democrats’ attempts to frame Republicans as the obstructionists, the numbers tell a different story. The same poll found that 62 percent of voters expect Republicans to emerge victorious from the shutdown fight, while only 38 percent believe Democrats will come out ahead.
