A History of Controversy
Erivo’s disturbing display comes as no surprise to those familiar with her history. In 2018, she openly threatened then-President Donald Trump with what can only be described as a call for supernatural revenge.
“I hope all the Africans in this world call on their ancestors. See you forgot. Juju, voodoo, magic. Don’t worry Donald, we are the wrong ones. You are not safe because you are on another continent. Biko do yourself a favor, take a break. Wahala de come for you oh,” Erivo wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

That wasn’t just a casual remark—it was a direct invocation of African spiritual practices against the sitting U.S. president. And yet, Hollywood embraced her, rewarding her with roles that continue to push boundaries and raise eyebrows among Christian and conservative audiences.
Opening the Oscars with a Message
Erivo wasn’t just a guest at the Oscars—she was part of the show’s grand opening. Alongside pop star Ariana Grande, she performed Defying Gravity, a song fittingly about rejecting rules and breaking away from tradition. Given her recent casting as Jesus, it almost felt like another deliberate jab at Christianity.
Hollywood has long been accused of glorifying anti-Christian narratives while shunning conservative values. Erivo’s casting as Jesus, combined with her dark and ominous aesthetic at the Oscars, adds fuel to the argument that Tinseltown thrives on pushing an anti-religious agenda.

The Bigger Picture
This isn’t just about a questionable fashion choice—it’s about the larger message coming out of Hollywood. Would an openly Christian actress who had threatened Democrats with “prayers for their downfall” be welcomed on such a stage? Or would she be blacklisted for being “too extreme”?
While Erivo gets praised for her “boldness” and “artistic expression,” it’s clear that a double standard exists. Christians are routinely mocked, yet figures like Erivo—who openly call for mystical revenge on political figures—are given center stage at events like the Oscars.
As Hollywood continues its march toward moral decay, one thing remains clear: faith and tradition will always be under attack, and those who push back are few and far between.
