ABC News has long positioned itself as a national gatekeeper against what it calls “misinformation,” frequently framing itself as a defender of journalistic integrity in an increasingly polarized media environment. But a recent incident involving a California-based ABC affiliate is now raising fresh questions about how far editorial “guardrails” actually go—and whether artificial intelligence is quietly being used to reshape government language before it reaches the public.

DHS did not rely on speculation or hearsay; the agency posted side-by-side screenshots on X, directly comparing the original statement provided to the outlet with the version that was prepared for broadcast.
What emerged from that comparison is now fueling controversy across social media and political circles.
At the center of the issue is an internal email from an ABC7 staff member to colleagues, in which she explained she “took the liberty of running it through AI asking that it be formatted for current journalist ethics and standards.” That single sentence has become the focal point of a much larger debate about transparency, bias, and the role of automation in modern newsrooms.
