Sources familiar with the discussions say the Pentagon is reviewing a range of possibilities, from increased cooperation with Panama’s security forces to the more extreme—though unlikely—option of seizing the canal by force. Two U.S. officials confirmed the report, noting that military intervention remains an unlikely but possible course of action if Panama refuses to cooperate.
