Mills fired back, defiantly declaring, “I’ll see you in court.” Trump wasted no time mocking her decision, making it clear she had picked the wrong fight.
And she learned that lesson the hard way. Just six hours after her bold challenge, the Justice Department’s Civil Rights division launched an investigation into Maine’s violation of Title IX.
“Maine would have you believe that it has no choice in how it treats women and girls in athletics—that is, that it must follow its state laws and allow male athletes to compete against women and girls,” Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Craig Trainor stated.
Trainor made it clear there would be no exceptions. Maine could either comply with federal law or lose access to federal education funding.
“Let me be clear,” Trainor continued. “If Maine wants to continue to receive federal funds from the Education Department, it has to follow Title IX. If it wants to forgo federal funds and continue to trample the rights of its young female athletes, that, too, is its choice. OCR will do everything in its power to ensure taxpayers are not funding blatant civil rights violators.”
Instead of backing down, Mills doubled down, painting Trump’s efforts to uphold Title IX as a sign of dictatorship.

“Who and what will he target next? Will it be you? Will it be because of your race or your religion? Will it be because you look different or think differently? Where does it end?” Mills ranted.
She then accused Trump of trying to rule like a monarch. “In America, the President is neither a King nor a dictator, as much as this one tries to act like it – and it is the rule of law that prevents him from being so,” she claimed.
Democrats may think this is a winning issue, but they are setting themselves up for disaster. Republicans are eager for this fight, knowing that the vast majority of Americans side with common sense. If Mills thought she could paint Trump as the villain, she just made a serious miscalculation.
