The senator followed up the next day, praising the decision. “Yesterday’s announcement by President @JoseRaulMulino that Panama will allow its participation in the CCP’s Belt and Road Initiative to expire is a great step forward for U.S.-Panama relations, a free Panama Canal, and another example of @POTUS leadership to protect our national security and deliver prosperity for the American people.”

China’s Influence in the Panama Canal Under Fire

Panama’s controversial deal with China dates back to 2017 when the Central American nation joined the BRI, an initiative designed by Beijing to expand its economic and political influence through infrastructure investments. In exchange for Chinese-funded projects, host nations often find themselves increasingly dependent on the CCP, giving China leverage over key trade routes and economic policies.

That’s precisely what raised alarm bells in Washington. With the Panama Canal handling 5% of global maritime trade, China’s presence in the region has long been a strategic concern for the U.S. The latest move by the Mulino administration signals that Panama is aware of these dangers and is willing to realign itself with American interests.

State Department representative Tammy Bruce reiterated the U.S. government’s firm position. “Secretary Rubio informed President Mulino and Minister Martínez-Acha that President Trump has made a preliminary determination that the current position of influence and control of the Chinese Communist Party over the Panama Canal area is a threat to the canal and represents a violation of the Treaty Concerning the Permanent Neutrality and Operation of the Panama Canal.”

She continued, “Secretary Rubio made clear that this status quo is unacceptable and that absent immediate changes, it would require the United States to take measures necessary to protect its rights under the Treaty.”

Trump Draws a Line in the Sand

President Trump minced no words when addressing the issue Sunday night, warning Panama that any continued cooperation with China would have serious consequences. “They’re not allowed to violate the agreement,” he stated. “China’s running the Panama Canal. It was not given to China. That was given to Panama, foolishly. But they violated the agreement. We’re going take it back, or something very powerful is going to happen.”

Trump’s stance leaves no doubt that his administration is committed to protecting American interests and maintaining control over critical global trade routes. This latest victory reinforces his reputation as a leader who prioritizes national security and economic sovereignty over globalist entanglements.

America First Scores Another Big Win

With Panama stepping away from China’s grip, the U.S. has dealt a significant blow to Beijing’s ambitions in Latin America. This decision strengthens U.S.-Panama relations and reasserts American influence in a region that has been a battleground for foreign powers.

The message is clear: under President Trump, the U.S. will not allow the Chinese Communist Party to gain control over strategic assets that threaten American security and economic interests. By forcing Panama’s hand, Trump and Rubio have proven that tough diplomacy works.

This is not just a victory for the U.S.; it’s a major setback for China’s expansionist goals. And for those who believe in putting America first, it’s another reason to celebrate.
