The attacks left half a million people in the Kharkiv region without heating, with temperatures hovering just above freezing. Blackouts also engulfed Kyiv and other regions, exacerbating an already dire situation for civilians.
Since the spring, Russian forces have escalated their focus on Ukraine’s energy sector, crippling much of its generating capacity. These sustained assaults have plunged millions into prolonged power outages, amplifying the hardships of winter. Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko provided updates on social media, revealing the extent of the damage.
“Russia was massively attacking the power sector and that restrictions on electricity supply were in place,” Galushchenko wrote on Facebook.
Ukraine’s largest private energy provider, DTEK, reported extensive damage to its facilities during the latest assault, marking the 13th large-scale attack on the energy sector this year.
“Russia’s Christmas gift to Ukraine: more than 70 missiles and 100 drones, directed at Ukrainian families celebrating in their homes and the energy infrastructure that keeps them safe. For the third holiday season, Russia weaponizes winter,” the company declared.
The deliberate timing of the attacks on Christmas underscored the severity of the situation. President Zelenskyy condemned the strikes as calculated and cruel.
“Every massive Russian strike requires time for preparation. It is never a spontaneous decision. It is a deliberate choice – not only of targets but also of timing and date,” he emphasized.
Zelenskyy also praised Ukraine’s defenders for their efforts in minimizing the damage, noting that over 50 missiles and numerous drones were intercepted. Despite this, the sheer scale of the assault caused significant damage and power outages across multiple regions.

“Russian evil will not break Ukraine and will not spoil Christmas,” Zelenskyy declared, vowing to rebuild and urging the nation to stay resilient.
As Ukrainians face a third winter of conflict, the resilience of the nation remains unwavering. The government and energy workers are racing against time to restore power and heat, while military forces continue to defend the skies. The resolve of the Ukrainian people, despite relentless attacks, is a testament to their enduring spirit.
This Christmas, though marked by darkness and devastation, also symbolizes hope and unity for a nation determined to withstand aggression and preserve its sovereignty.
