For the second consecutive year, Ukrainians attempted to embrace Christmas on December 25, distancing themselves from the traditional Orthodox date of January 7. This shift, aimed at erasing Russian influence, has taken on deeper meaning amidst the ongoing conflict. However, this year’s holiday was overshadowed by another massive wave of Russian air raids targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, leaving countless Ukrainians in darkness and cold.
Russian forces launched a barrage of missiles, drones, and other ballistic weaponry across Ukraine in what Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described as an “inhuman” assault. The timing, deliberately coinciding with Christmas celebrations, drew widespread condemnation.

“Russia attacked Ukraine’s energy system and some cities with cruise and ballistic missiles plus drones on Wednesday in an ‘inhuman’ Christmas Day assault,” President Zelenskyy stated.
