Catherine Herridge, an investigative reporter at CBS, was fired, which has caused controversy. Outrage ensued when the network confiscated Herridge’s laptops and files after she was fired, allegedly holding private information about privileged sources.
In addition to frightening Herridge’s coworkers, the strong action garnered attention from the SAG-AFTRA union, which expressed worries about the safety of sources and journalistic independence.

Herridge’s vigorous pursuit of articles that were critical of the Biden White House and specific Democratic individuals made the situation more worrisome.
A former CBS journalist revealed to The Hill that many staff members “are confused why [Herridge] was laid off, as one of the correspondents who broke news regularly and did a lot of original reporting.” One person stated, “I had never seen a seizure of records from a departing journalist, and that the move had sent a ‘chilling signal’ in the ranks of CBS.”
Speaking in confidence, a former management of CBS stated, “I had ‘never heard of anything like this.’” They mentioned how, in the past, the firm had helped pack personal goods like cups and post-its, and that when journalists left, they were free to keep all of their papers and personal office supplies.
The manager called Herridge’s materials’ retention “outrageous” and said it posed a direct risk to the security of secret sources.
