Melania’s Strategy: Tucker’s White House Bid?

Since former President Donald Trump seems to be a lock to win the Republican presidential nomination in 2020, speculation regarding his possible running mate is rife.

According to Axios, Melania Trump surreptitiously begs her husband to choose Tucker Carlson as his deputy. However, can we believe this anonymous source?

“[H]ere’s an interesting twist: Melania Trump is an advocate for picking Tucker Carlson, the booted Fox News star,” Co-founder Mike Allen and CEO Jim VandeHei of Axios wrote in their latest “Behind the Curtain” piece on Thursday, headlined, “Exclusive: How Trump would build his loyalty-first Cabinet.”

“She thinks Carlson would make a powerful onstage extension of her husband, a source close to Trump told us,” the pair wrote. “The former first lady has made few campaign appearances this time around — but a Trump-Carlson ticket might encourage her to hit the trail.”

But as the essay pointed out right away, “many people close to Trump” didn’t believe that would ever truly happen.

“The idea of Tucker Carlson has been discounted by many people close to Trump because they assume he’d never pick someone who could outshine him,” it said. “And Trump’s staff is convinced (correctly) that Carlson can’t be controlled. But the two men talk a lot.”

According to Axios, when Trump was questioned about the prospect of Carlson serving as his running mate, he stated, “I like Tucker a lot. … He’s got great common sense.”

That’s hardly a “no,” but I’m not sure it counts as a resounding support either.

ALERT! Major Water Restrictions In Effect!

Top vying for vice president include Rep. Byron Donalds, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Sen. J.D. Vance, Gov. Kristi Noem, Sen. Kari Lake, and Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

Donalds, a 45-year-old contender from Florida who is diverse and youthful, is said to be eager to serve as vice president. His inclusion on the ticket would provide much-needed diversity, as he is African-American. Furthermore, given Trump’s tight victory in the critical state of Florida in 2020, his popularity there may help him win important votes.

Greene of Georgia said to The Guardian in August that she was “on a list” of potential vice presidential candidates at the time. She was said to be thinking about running for the Senate as well, but she was delaying her decision until she got more information from the Trump campaign.

Former contender for Arizona’s governorship in 2022, Kari Lake is currently running for the Senate. If she didn’t think she could be vice president or didn’t want to take the position if it were offered, she probably wouldn’t have joined the Senate campaign.

The governor of South Dakota, Noem, said on Fox in August that he would “Of course, I would consider it,” if asked to run with Trump.

“Our country is breaking right in front of our very eyes today, and everybody should be a part of putting it back on its foundation,” she said at the time. “And if President Trump is going to be back in the White House, I’d do all I can to help him be successful.”

Sanders of Arkansas is the most notable contender on Axios’ list since she has worked with President Trump before.

And Vance, the “Hillbilly Elegy” author who won an Ohio Senate seat in 2022, “might prefer to remain in the Senate as ‘Trump’s Hammer,’” Axios said.

Will Trump’s emphasis on allegiance keep him from selecting a former rival for his running mate? Nominees for president frequently act in this way.
