Earlier this year, a biblical film once again made history.
A first for the industry, the movie “His Only Son” that shows Abraham sacrificing Isaac is awarded the prestigious Torch Award for Film.
On May 11 in Provo, Utah, the movie distributor Angel Studios’ “Illuminate” gala honored the winning movie.
The Chosen,” a popular Christian television series, is the studio’s main source of popularity.
Due to the unrivaled success of a certain movie, the award’s establishment in 2022, which was first restricted to series productions, set the door for the emergence of a new category. Angel Studios answered the demand and created space so that movies could get the credit they rightfully earned.
Director David Helling expressed surprise at the honor to the Washington Examiner.
“I didn’t expect it. We praise the Lord for what he has put together with Angel Studios,” Helling said.
Despite launching in fewer than 2,000 theaters worldwide, “His Only Son” made $5.5 million over its first weekend in March, according to the Washington Examiner.
It’s impressive that the movie has had such success despite its low $250,000 budget, as reported by Variety.

“That’s exciting, just to know that this little film that was so humbly made on such a humble budget, that the Lord is just multiplying it out internationally, and that the Gospel impact will continue on for generations,” Helling said.
“Crowdfunded movie ‘His Only Son’ pays back 2,024 investors successfully and once more makes history.”
According to the Washington Examiner, the film is the first of its sort to receive a countrywide cinema release and was entirely funded through crowdfunding.
Neal Harmon, the CEO and co-founder of Angel Studios, claimed in an interview with the Washington Examiner from back in March that the film swiftly hit its crowdfunding capacity.
“Crowdfunding for His Only Son reached capacity in 100 hours. We are responding to the demand from the audience by at least tripling the theater count nationwide and throwing our most valuable marketing resources behind the film,” Harmon said.
According to Helling, the movie is still playing in other countries and has already been seen in South Korea, Brazil, and Latin America.
According to Helling, a movie on the life of Isaac’s son Jacob is probably in the works.
“By God’s grace, I think we’re going to do another one about the life of Jacob,” Helling said. “We’ll see what the Lord keeps doing with it.”
