In preparation for his eagerly anticipated 2024 presidential campaign, Donald Trump took the stage on Thursday in Manchester, New Hampshire. During this speech, Mr. Trump surprised everyone by taking aim at South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, a steadfast supporter of the president who has openly endorsed his reelection campaign.
Graham has remained a staunch supporter of the former president and even staked $20 on Trump’s ability to win re-election in four years.
An unexpected contrast in American politics was created on Thursday when Donald Trump referred to the typically centrist Republican as a “progressive” in his campaign speech.
President Trump highlighted his “reciprocal” tariff strategy, which aims to offset foreign countries’ taxes with US duties on their goods, when praising his economic measures from his first term. He is adamant about taking a strong stand on trade issues and making sure that American corporate interests are treated fairly.
“It’s called reciprocal,” Trump told his audience. “So, if India charges our companies a hundred, we charge their companies a hundred, it’s very simple.”
“And yet we have people in Congress that say, ‘No, I don’t think that’s good,’” Trump continued. “Anybody that says that — so, it’s very interesting, Lindsey Graham, the progressive from South Carolina,” he spoke as some in the audience cheered and jeered.
“No, he’s a progressive. But he’s got some good things, too, OK?” Trump said. “But Lindsey Graham, I said to him, ‘Lindsey, you gotta go along with this,’ we were all set to get it done. ‘You gotta go along with this.’ So he says, ‘Let me get this straight, if they charge us, we charge them the same thing.’”
Senator Graham acknowledged that he did not have any experience in trade policy during his talk with Trump.
“He said it’s not his strength,” Trump recalled, “other things are his strength,” but in the end, Trump noted that Graham said, “You got my vote.”

“So easy,” Trump concluded.
Graham has surprise endorsed Trump for president in 2024, after highlighting a caution to never-Trumpers in 2021. This shows that he does not aim to undercut possible GOP candidates like Nikki Haley and Tim Scott.
“It’s not anything about Nikki or Tim that I find fault in. It’s about the ability of President Trump to get things done that should be done,” Graham stated last weekend on CNN’s “State of the Union” program.
Due to his prior backing of the late Sen. John McCain and even more moderate politics generally, Senator Graham has been viewed with distrust by many conservatives; nevertheless, he is currently perceived as embracing MAGA values at an increasing pace.
Trump has steadfastly supported Sen. Graham for years, despite the opposition of his supporters—a stance in favor of the South Carolina senator that might be in opposition to the backing of the previous president.
The relationship between Graham and Trump has been turbulent. The senator was dubbed a “Republican in Name Only” by President Trump in 2022 for his reluctance to pardon individuals implicated in destruction during the Capitol storming on January 6th.
Due to his contradictory behavior with Senator Lindsey Graham, President Trump’s position on the matter is unclear.
President Trump has developed a clever tactic to keep his following loyal, making fun of Senator Graham’s classification as “progressive” and highlighting their shared support for economic policies. This provides more proof that, in its efforts to please its most ardent supporters, the current administration will not let Republican establishment leaders any wiggle room.
Will President Trump’s strategy succeed, fail, or have no impact? He has stepped onto a precarious tightrope between two sides. Time will only tell.
