Congress Just Passed a Crackdown on Welfare Fraud

House Republicans scored another immigration enforcement victory this week after lawmakers approved legislation that would make welfare fraud a specific deportable offense for noncitizens living in the United States.

The legislation, known as the Deporting Fraudsters Act, passed the House by a vote of 231-186, with every Democrat voting against the measure.

Supporters say the bill is designed to protect taxpayer-funded programs from abuse and ensure that individuals who unlawfully obtain government benefits face serious consequences. Republicans argued that Americans should not be forced to subsidize benefits for people who entered the country illegally and then exploit public assistance programs.
