Newsom continued by criticizing President Donald Trump in unusually direct terms while insisting he has nothing to conceal.
“We have nothing to hide. Mr. President, come after me. I am not going anywhere. The country is watching,” Newsom wrote.
According to a report published Monday by The New York Times, Jennifer Siebel Newsom has become a primary focus of the federal investigation. The newspaper, citing an anonymous source familiar with the matter, reported that former employees connected to Siebel Newsom’s nonprofit organizations, along with individuals who previously worked in the governor’s office, have been interviewed by investigators.
The same report also challenged Newsom’s assertion that the investigation originated in Washington for political reasons. According to the newspaper’s source, the inquiry was initiated by federal law enforcement officials based in California rather than senior officials in the nation’s capital.
Fox News reported that the investigation first began in 2025. According to its reporting, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Sacramento has been reviewing whistleblower allegations involving the personal finances of both Gov. Newsom and his wife.
Additional reporting by the New York Post indicated that one area receiving scrutiny involves financial contributions made to one of Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s nonprofit organizations. The report said investigators are examining allegations that funding came from what were described as “special interests doing business with Newsom and the state.”
The New York Post also reported that investigators may be examining whether the matter has any connection to former Newsom chief of staff Dana Williamson. Last month, Williamson pleaded guilty to illegally assisting a former client who was involved in litigation brought by the state, prompting questions about whether federal investigators are reviewing related activities.
Newsom is prohibited from seeking another term as California governor because of term limits. As attention increasingly turns toward the 2028 presidential race, his name has frequently appeared among potential Democratic contenders.
Current polling compiled by RealClearPolling places Newsom at 17.4 percent support among prospective Democratic presidential candidates. Those surveys show him trailing former Vice President Kamala Harris by roughly 10 percentage points.
Despite widespread media interest surrounding the reported investigation, the Department of Justice has not publicly commented. Multiple news organizations sought a response from the agency, but officials declined to provide any statement regarding the matter.
As of now, no criminal charges have been announced against either Gov. Newsom or Jennifer Siebel Newsom, and the scope and outcome of the reported federal investigation remain unclear.
