A longtime Democratic figure is openly pointing to what he believes is a growing structural problem inside his own party, warning that Democrats have drifted away from everyday voters and become overly dependent on political consultants rather than grassroots engagement.
Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC), one of the most influential Democrats in South Carolina politics, made the remarks during a recent appearance on MS NOW’s “The Weekend,” where he was asked to reflect on how the party can improve its standing with voters heading into future elections.
When pressed on the broader direction of the Democratic Party, host Eugene Daniels asked:
“What’s your honest assessment about how if you zoom out, right, not just South Carolina, not just black voters, but how does the party actually change the way that folks view the successes, the failures, and the future that the Democratic Party is promising?”
Clyburn responded by calling for a return to what he described as fundamental political engagement with voters.
