DOJ Just Opened a Can of Worms for Carroll

Now, attention is shifting away from the courtroom verdicts and toward the money trail that helped make the lawsuits possible.

One of the key issues stems from testimony Carroll gave during a sworn deposition in 2022. During questioning, Carroll was asked whether any outside individuals or organizations were financing her legal battle.

At the time, Carroll indicated that no third party was paying her legal bills.

That testimony later became a source of controversy after reports revealed that funding tied to Hoffman had indeed been used to support legal costs associated with the case.

The arrangement became public knowledge shortly before Carroll’s first trial in 2023, prompting immediate questions from Trump’s legal team.

Subsequent explanations offered by Hoffman’s associates attempted to clarify how the funding reached Carroll’s case.

According to Hoffman adviser Dmitri Mehlhorn, money had originally been provided to Carroll’s law firm, Kaplan Hecker & Fink, for separate public-interest legal work. Attorneys later requested permission to redirect some of those funds to assist Carroll’s lawsuit against Trump.

That explanation did little to quiet critics who questioned why the financial backing had not been disclosed earlier.

The controversy intensified when Carroll addressed the issue publicly during a CNN appearance in May 2023.

Facing questions about her deposition testimony, Carroll offered a surprising explanation.

“I just completely forgot he even existed,” she added.

The remark quickly generated headlines and fueled criticism from Trump’s supporters, who argued that forgetting the involvement of a billionaire political donor funding legal efforts against a former president strained credibility.

Hoffman, one of the Democratic Party’s most influential financial backers, has spent years supporting anti-Trump political causes and organizations.

He has never hidden his opposition to the president.

In a statement released in August 2024, Hoffman openly explained his motivation for becoming involved in political battles against Trump.

“My primary motivation for participating in politics over the last eight years has been to oppose Donald Trump’s ongoing attempts to break American democracy by corrupting and hollowing out its most cherished institutions.”

He continued, “Unlike some, I have not forgotten Trump’s support of the Jan. 6 insurrection and its violence, nor his attempt to coerce state officials to ‘find’ him some more votes.”

Trump’s attorneys argued that the funding revelations created significant credibility concerns and raised questions about the accuracy of Carroll’s sworn testimony.

Courts ultimately rejected those claims.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit concluded there was insufficient evidence to prove Carroll intentionally provided false testimony. Judges also noted there was no evidence that Carroll personally arranged the funding or necessarily knew where the money originated before the issue later became public.

Meanwhile, reports suggesting Carroll herself was facing a criminal investigation have largely been debunked.

According to sources cited by Axios and other outlets, the primary focus of the federal inquiry is American Future Republic rather than Carroll personally.

At this stage, no criminal charges have been filed against Carroll, Hoffman, or the nonprofit organization.

Federal prosecutors have remained largely silent, offering few details about the investigation as it continues behind closed doors.

Nevertheless, the development has reignited debate over outside influence, political funding, and transparency in high-profile legal cases involving major political figures.

For many observers, the most significant question is no longer what happened inside the courtroom. Instead, it is whether the public was given the full story about who helped finance one of the most consequential legal campaigns ever launched against Donald Trump.

As federal investigators continue their work, that question is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
