Chemical Tank Crisis Takes Sudden Turn

Officials in Orange County are now signaling that a major industrial scare at a Garden Grove aerospace facility has passed its most dangerous stage, after days of concern that a volatile chemical storage tank could have triggered a catastrophic explosion affecting tens of thousands of residents.

The incident unfolded at the facility operated by GKN Aerospace, where emergency crews were called in after a large chemical tank began overheating under abnormal conditions. According to officials, the situation escalated quickly enough to prompt mass evacuations and emergency declarations across multiple cities in Orange County, California.

At the center of the crisis was a 34,000-gallon industrial storage tank containing approximately 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate (MMA), a highly flammable chemical widely used in aerospace manufacturing processes. Emergency responders determined that a malfunction in a refrigeration system valve led to unsafe temperature increases inside the tank, creating the conditions for a potentially volatile chain reaction.

Responders from the Orange County Fire Authority were dispatched on May 21 to manage what was immediately classified as a hazardous materials emergency. As temperatures inside the tank continued to climb, the structure began showing visible signs of stress, including vapor venting, physical bulging, and eventually a crack in the tank wall.
