Former Democratic Congressman Barney Frank, one of the most outspoken liberal figures in Washington and a driving force behind sweeping banking regulations after the 2008 financial collapse, has died at the age of 86.
Frank passed away Tuesday at his residence in Ogunquit, Maine, following a battle with congestive heart failure. Family members confirmed that the former lawmaker had entered hospice care in recent weeks as his health rapidly declined.
For more than three decades, Frank served as a dominant force inside the Democratic Party and on Capitol Hill. Representing Massachusetts’ 4th Congressional District from 1981 through 2013, he became nationally recognized for his confrontational debate style, quick humor, and relentless appearances on television where he frequently defended liberal economic policies while clashing with conservatives.
