For generations, Americans have memorized the most famous line in the Declaration of Independence without realizing where some historians believe the language may have first been preached.
Now a renewed debate is erupting after Christian historians David and Tim Barton pointed to evidence suggesting the Founders may have drawn directly from an early colonial sermon delivered decades before Thomas Jefferson penned America’s founding document.
And if they are right, it completely shatters the Left’s favorite narrative about religion having no meaningful role in America’s birth.
Speaking at an event hosted by Pastor Allen Jackson at World Outreach Church, the Bartons explained how a little-known preacher from colonial Massachusetts may have helped shape the very words that launched the American Revolution.
The sermon in question came from John Wise, a pastor from Ipswich, Massachusetts, who delivered fiery messages on liberty, equality, and self-government in the early 1700s.
According to Tim Barton, Wise preached words that sound astonishingly familiar to every American schoolchild.
