As tensions escalated, agents began tracking Marx and ordering him to comply with commands. Prosecutors say the suspect instead drew the weapon in front of numerous civilians gathered nearby, triggering a rapid exchange of gunfire with federal agents in broad daylight.
The terrifying shootout reportedly caused panic among bystanders in the crowded area. During the exchange, an innocent civilian was struck by gunfire while crossing the street with family members, according to authorities. Federal agents eventually subdued Marx after he collapsed from gunshot wounds sustained during the confrontation.
Investigators say the suspect continued making disturbing statements even after his arrest. While being transported in an ambulance, Marx allegedly shouted, “F*** the White House,” before repeatedly screaming, “Kill me, kill me, kill me.”
Authorities have not yet announced a possible motive behind the incident, though the rhetoric allegedly used by Marx has intensified concerns surrounding threats against public officials and government institutions.
Officials reportedly identified Marx using a Texas driver’s license recovered during the arrest. Prosecutors also claim investigators uncovered multiple aliases allegedly connected to the suspect, including “Patrick Michael” and “Michael Zavici.”
The DOJ further stated that Marx did not possess a legal permit to carry a handgun within Washington, D.C., adding another layer to the already serious allegations against him.
At this stage, investigators have not publicly confirmed whether Marx specifically intended to target Vice President Vance, President Donald Trump, or any other federal official. However, the timing and location of the confrontation — occurring near a vice presidential motorcade route — have intensified scrutiny from federal authorities.
The incident also arrives amid heightened security concerns in Washington following another alarming case tied to the White House. Less than two weeks earlier, California teacher Cole Allen was charged after allegedly forcing his way into the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner while armed with multiple weapons in what prosecutors described as an assassination attempt against President Trump.
Federal prosecutors signaled they intend to aggressively pursue the case against Marx and send a strong message about violence targeting law enforcement and government officials.
“We will prove this defendant carried an illegal firearm into the heart of Washington, D.C., opened fire at Secret Service officers near a crowded intersection, and shot an innocent bystander who was simply crossing the street with his family,” said U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro.
“My office will pursue the most serious charges available against anyone who brings gun violence to our streets, particularly when that violence unfolds steps from the seat of our government and the path of the Vice President of the United States.”
The stunning confrontation has once again highlighted growing security threats facing federal officials and law enforcement officers in Washington, as authorities continue investigating whether Marx acted alone or had broader intentions behind the brazen attack.
