A fresh political clash is brewing as Ron DeSantis moves forward with a bold redistricting strategy that could reshape the balance of power in Congress ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
The Florida governor is pushing a newly drawn congressional map that, if approved, could deliver a significant boost to Republicans by adding as many as four seats to their column. The proposal is now in the hands of the state’s GOP-controlled legislature, where it faces its next major test before potentially landing back on DeSantis’ desk for final approval.
At the heart of DeSantis’ argument is a claim that Florida has not received fair representation following the 2020 Census. He insists that the state’s rapid population growth, combined with a shifting political landscape, justifies a fresh look at how district lines are drawn.
“Florida got shortchanged in the 2020 Census, and we’ve been fighting for fair representation ever since,” DeSantis told Fox News Digital. “Our population has since grown dramatically, and we have moved from a Democrat majority to a 1.5 million Republican advantage. Drawing maps based on race, which is reflected in our current congressional districts, is unconstitutional and should be prohibited.”
