What was supposed to be one of Washington’s most high-profile media gatherings turned into a scene of panic and confusion after an armed suspect allegedly attempted to carry out an attack during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
Authorities have now identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California.
Despite early rumors spreading online that the suspect had been killed, updated reports confirmed Allen was taken into custody alive after Secret Service agents moved swiftly to stop the threat inside the Hilton hotel lobby near the security checkpoint.
“The attempted shooter at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner is 31 year old Cole Tomas Allen from Torrance, California and he is in custody,” New York Post and Fox News reporter Karol Markowicz confirmed in a post on X.
According to initial details, Allen allegedly assembled a long firearm inside an unsecured back room before making his way toward the magnetometer screening area, where he reportedly attempted to begin the attack.
