Wisconsin Judge Faces Stunning Consequences

A federal judge has delivered a decisive ruling upholding the conviction of former Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge Hannah Dugan, rejecting her post-trial attempt to overturn a jury verdict that found her guilty of obstructing federal immigration enforcement operations.

The case, which has drawn national attention due to its implications for courtroom authority and immigration enforcement, centers on allegations that Dugan interfered with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers who were attempting to detain an individual outside her courtroom earlier this year.

U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman, appointed during the Clinton administration, concluded that the evidence presented at trial was more than sufficient for a jury to determine that Dugan obstructed federal officers in the course of their duties. The ruling effectively leaves in place the felony conviction reached by a jury in December following a weeklong trial.

According to court records, Dugan was convicted of felony obstruction but acquitted of a separate charge alleging she concealed an individual who was facing deportation proceedings. Despite the mixed verdict, the obstruction conviction remained intact and became the focus of her post-trial legal challenge.
