Eric Swalwell Caught in New Controversy

A fresh wave of controversy is engulfing Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA), as new allegations surface regarding his campaign finances and personal conduct. According to a report by the New York Post, the California Democrat is now facing scrutiny over claims that campaign funds were used to compensate a live-in nanny who may not have had proper authorization to work in the United States for part of her employment.

The individual at the center of the controversy is Amanda Barbosa, a 33-year-old Brazilian national from Rio de Janeiro. Barbosa reportedly entered the United States in January 2021 under a two-year au pair visa, which allowed her to work legally as a live-in childcare provider until December 2022.

Swalwell allegedly brought Barbosa on board in the fall of 2021 to help care for his three young children. Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings reviewed by the New York Post indicate that she received $3,914 in campaign funds during 2021, followed by a significantly larger sum of $46,930 in 2022.

However, the financial trail appears to shift after Barbosa’s visa expired. While direct payments to her reportedly stopped at that point, new FEC records show that more than $52,000 in campaign expenses labeled as “childcare” were reimbursed directly to Swalwell himself between 2023 and 2024. Then, in 2025, after Barbosa reportedly received a permanent labor certification in 2024, she was once again paid—this time receiving $38,905 in campaign funds.
