84% of Americans Want It—But Thune Says No?

“They’re not on our side.”

That blunt statement is becoming an increasingly common sentiment among frustrated Republican voters across the United States. For millions of conservatives who turned out in record numbers to support Republican candidates, the expectation was simple: elect leaders who would carry their priorities to Washington and actually fight to enact them. Instead, many grassroots voters now say they feel ignored by members of their own party.

At the center of the growing anger is Senate Republican leadership—particularly John Thune of South Dakota. Critics argue that despite holding political leverage and widespread public support on key issues, GOP leadership continues to stall or sideline legislation that Republican voters overwhelmingly want passed.

One of the most glaring examples is voter identification laws. Poll after poll has shown that voter ID requirements enjoy enormous support among Americans. Surveys consistently find that roughly 84 percent of the public—including large numbers of Democrats—favor requiring identification to vote. For Republican voters, that level of bipartisan agreement should make the issue one of the easiest legislative victories imaginable.

Yet despite that overwhelming support, the policy remains stuck in Washington gridlock.
