House Vote Shocks Washington on Trump Tariffs

House Democrats scored a narrow but symbolic victory Wednesday night after pushing through a vote to block President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada. The measure passed the House by a slim 219–211 margin, exposing deep divisions within the Republican conference and highlighting just how fragile GOP control of the chamber has become.

The vote immediately drew attention not just because of the policy implications, but because six Republicans crossed party lines to side with Democrats. Reps. Thomas Massie, Don Bacon, Brian Fitzpatrick, Jeff Hurd, Kevin Kiley, and Dan Newhouse all voted in favor of terminating the Trump-backed tariffs, handing Democrats the votes they needed to advance the resolution.

Despite the House outcome, the legislation faces long odds going forward. The measure is widely expected to stall in the Senate, where similar efforts in the past have failed to gain lasting traction. Even if the resolution somehow made it to the president’s desk, President Trump has already made it clear he would veto the bill without hesitation.

The vote underscores a growing reality in Washington: Democrats effectively wield outsized influence in the House due to Republicans’ razor-thin majority. With so little margin for error, every defection becomes magnified—and a handful of so-called Republican “moderates” can derail leadership priorities at any moment.
