Another Georgia Democrat lawmaker is now facing serious legal trouble, adding to a growing list of elected officials accused of abusing taxpayer-funded COVID relief programs.
State Representative Karen Bennett, a Democrat from Stone Mountain, has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges related to pandemic unemployment fraud. The indictment, handed down Monday, accuses Bennett of lying to obtain federal COVID-19 relief funds she was allegedly not entitled to receive.
Federal prosecutors say Bennett improperly collected unemployment assistance during the height of the pandemic, even though her business continued operating for most of that time. The case raises fresh concerns about accountability, transparency, and the double standards often seen among progressive lawmakers who publicly champion government spending while allegedly misusing it behind the scenes.
Bennett, who has been outspoken in support of Black Lives Matter and the “defund the police” movement, now finds herself on the opposite side of the justice system she has frequently criticized. Critics argue the case highlights a recurring pattern: left-wing officials promoting expansive federal programs while allegedly exploiting them for personal benefit.
According to the indictment, Bennett received nearly $14,000 in pandemic unemployment benefits for her in-home physical therapy business, Metro Therapy Providers. On her application, she claimed the business was unable to operate due to COVID-19 restrictions. However, investigators say that claim does not match reality.
