Hollywood’s most outspoken elites are once again struggling to cope with Donald Trump’s return to the Oval Office. For years, celebrity activists have treated Trump as their favorite political punching bag, using glossy magazine interviews and red-carpet soundbites to vent their outrage. But this time, one A-list actor flew too close to the sun—and President Trump wasted no time reminding him why attacking Trump in public rarely ends well.
That actor was George Clooney.
As Americans rang in the New Year, Clooney chose to spend New Year’s Eve giving a politically charged interview to Variety, where he unloaded on Trump and complained bitterly about the state of the American media. In classic Hollywood fashion, Clooney positioned himself as a moral authority, scolding major networks and questioning their decisions to settle lawsuits with Trump.
Clooney specifically took aim at ABC and CBS, furious that the networks chose legal settlements instead of prolonged courtroom battles. According to Clooney, they should have taken a far more aggressive stance toward the President. He declared the networks should have told Trump to “go f*** yourself.”
