“You’ve shared your voices in recent weeks not just on our logo, but also on our restaurants. We’re continuing to listen. Today, we’re suspending our remodels,” the statement read.
The company acknowledged the disconnect with longtime fans, explaining, “We heard clearly that the modern remodel design does not reflect what you love about Cracker Barrel. We had tested this design in only four out of 660 locations, and we won’t continue with it.”
Online backlash had been swift and severe, accusing the chain of abandoning the charm that made it a staple of Americana. Critics pointed to the loss of rocking chairs, cozy fireplaces, peg games, and authentic antiques sourced from the chain’s warehouse in Lebanon, Tennessee. Instead, the planned renovations mirrored the generic interiors of contemporary fast-food chains, alienating the loyal customer base.
Cracker Barrel sought to reassure diners, noting, “With our recent announcement that our ‘Old Timer’ logo will remain, along with our bigger focus on the kitchen and on your plate, we hope that today’s step reinforces that we hear you.”

Much of the heat has landed on CEO Julie Felss Masino, who has led the franchise since July 2023. Reports indicate Masino overlooked concerns raised by major investor Sardar Biglari, who had flagged issues with her strategy as early as May 2024.
Biglari’s frustration boiled over in a letter to shareholders, where he slammed Masino’s “strategic transformation plan” as an “obvious folly.” He wrote bluntly, “Cracker Barrel is not a broken brand but it has a broken board.”
The episode has been cited as an example of corporate myopia, with executives ignoring the warnings of key stakeholders. Critics argue Masino’s decision highlights a dangerous trend where corporate leaders push forward with misguided strategies despite clear signs of public disapproval.
Industry observers point out that other executives have faced much harsher consequences for far less. Alissa Heinerscheid, Bud Light’s former marketing director, was ousted in 2023 after a controversial partnership with a transgender influencer sparked a backlash among the company’s traditional consumer base.
For Cracker Barrel, the reversal is a stark reminder: when a brand built on nostalgia and Americana is tampered with, its loyal followers will not stay silent.
