The same Boston sheriff who once proudly booted federal immigration agents out of his jails is now in handcuffs himself. Suffolk County Sheriff Steve Tompkins — a Democrat known for his aggressive sanctuary policies — was arrested Friday on serious federal corruption charges.
Back in 2019, Tompkins made headlines when he barred ICE from operating in his facilities, a move that earned him praise from the Left and outrage from law-abiding citizens who saw it as a dangerous betrayal of public safety. Now, years later, that same sheriff is facing accusations that he abused his badge to line his own pockets.
According to the FBI, Tompkins was taken into custody in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, after an investigation uncovered a disturbing scheme. Federal authorities say he demanded $50,000 from the owner of a national cannabis retail company that wanted to operate in Boston.
