A sitting Democrat state senator in Minnesota is now a convicted felon—and potentially facing decades in prison—after jurors found her guilty of breaking into her stepmother’s home in a bizarre and emotional case that has rocked state politics.
Sen. Nicole Mitchell, a member of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL), was found guilty of felony burglary on Friday following a highly publicized trial that featured bodycam footage, admitted lies to police, and a motive rooted in family tension. The fallout could force a special election and leave Democrats scrambling to defend her seat.
According to Fox News, Mitchell could be sentenced to as little as six months or as much as 20 years behind bars, depending on the judge’s final decision.
