But the political fallout wasn’t confined to the Paxtons’ personal lives. Within hours of the news breaking, the NRSC released a statement sharply critical of Ken Paxton, a move that many conservative commentators viewed as calculated and opportunistic. The group’s involvement immediately triggered suspicions about political motives behind the sudden flurry of statements.

“It was almost as if the entire events of today were planned to hurt Ken Paxton,” wrote some conservative observers, suspicious about the timing of the divorce announcement and the NRSC’s quick response.
The NRSC, already under fire from MAGA supporters for funneling millions into candidates viewed as hostile to Trump’s movement, has been accused of ignoring or undermining popular pro-Trump figures like Rick Scott, Ted Cruz, and Kari Lake. The group notoriously spent big on the Senate run of Maryland’s Larry Hogan, a prominent Trump critic, while allegedly leaving Kari Lake high and dry during her 2024 campaign.
“Maybe this horrible RINO group could start going after its weak members instead of trashing popular conservatives,” suggested frustrated conservative voices, who see the NRSC as hopelessly out of touch with the party’s grassroots.
Tensions between the NRSC and Texas conservatives have been simmering for months. Earlier this year, the NRSC endorsed longtime Senator John Cornyn—a figure many grassroots activists dismiss as a Washington insider—over Attorney General Ken Paxton in a potential 2026 primary. That endorsement deepened suspicions among Paxton loyalists that the party establishment was plotting to sideline one of Texas’s most prominent conservative fighters.
“Ken Paxton is arguably the only reason Texas remains a dominant red state today,” many conservatives insist. “It was Ken Paxton, and ONLY Ken Paxton who fought Democrat voter fraud in the state and continues to battle the cheating Democrats and their election crimes.”
Conservative pundit Kurt Schlichter didn’t mince words in his response to the NRSC’s latest salvo, urging the establishment outfit to “shut the hell up.”
Many on the right are bracing for further attacks on Paxton, predicting that personal issues from his divorce could be weaponized to damage his political standing and bolster Cornyn’s fortunes. “Here is our prediction… Look for the attacks on Paxton from his ex-wife and others to escalate now to help horrible RINO John Cornyn. You know it’s coming,” warned conservative analysts.
For grassroots conservatives, this week’s spectacle confirms what they’ve long suspected: the GOP’s internal civil war isn’t going away any time soon. And with key Senate races on the horizon, the NRSC’s growing rift with pro-Trump Republicans could define the party’s future battles—for Texas and beyond.
