NFL Hall of Famer Dies at 67

A beloved warrior of the gridiron has taken his final bow. Chicago Bears icon and NFL Hall of Famer Steve McMichael, whose toughness on the field became legendary, passed away on Thursday at the age of 67. His death was confirmed by Jarrett Payton, son of legendary Bears running back Walter Payton.

McMichael, affectionately known as “Mongo,” fought to the very end. Surrounded by family and friends, he slipped away peacefully, Payton shared.

Back in 2021, McMichael revealed he had been diagnosed with the cruel, unforgiving disease ALS. His condition deteriorated rapidly in recent weeks, culminating in his family’s heartbreaking announcement that he would be entering hospice care just a day before his passing. His wife, Misty, told Fox 32 Chicago that McMichael had been “unresponsive for last two weeks and in and out of the hospital.”

“With deep sorrow, I share that Steve McMichael passed at 5:28 PM after a brave fight with #ALS, surrounded by loved ones,” Payton wrote. “I’m grateful to have been with him in his final moments. Please keep Steve and his family your prayers.”
