A horrifying attack on the Upper East Side subway left New Yorkers shaken over the weekend. Authorities say a 34-year-old Honduran immigrant, Bairon Hernandez, faces multiple charges after pushing two men onto the tracks at the Lexington Avenue and 63rd Street station. One of the victims, an elderly Air Force veteran, is now fighting for his life.
Hernandez was charged with attempted murder, attempted assault, assault, and reckless endangerment following the brazen Sunday morning attack, police confirmed. The shocking incident has renewed concerns over safety in New York’s subway system, which has seen a steady rise in push attacks in recent years.
According to investigators, Hernandez first targeted 30-year-old Jhon Rodriguez on the southbound F and Q platform. He reportedly came up behind Rodriguez and shoved him onto the tracks without warning, leaving the young man disoriented and terrified.
Authorities say the violence did not stop there. Hernandez allegedly turned on an 83-year-old man, Air Force veteran Richard Williams, pushing him onto the same tracks moments later. Both men were fortunately pulled back onto the platform before a train arrived, averting what could have been a double tragedy.
