Kristi Noem is shaking up Washington once again—this time, with a move that’s sending shockwaves through the immigration debate and putting the Biden-era status quo on notice.

On Friday, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem declared the end of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti, a program that has allowed hundreds of thousands of Haitians to live and work in the U.S. since the catastrophic 2010 earthquake. The decision sets a firm expiration date: August 3, 2025, with legal protections officially terminating on September 2, 2025.
“This decision restores integrity in our immigration system and ensures that Temporary Protective Status is actually temporary,” said a DHS spokesperson. “The environmental situation in Haiti has improved enough that it is safe for Haitian citizens to return home.”
Half a million lives upended
The move impacts roughly 520,000 Haitians who’ve built lives in America under TPS protections. Many have been here more than a decade, raising families, starting businesses, and becoming woven into local communities. But the Trump administration is determined to tighten immigration policies and stop the cycle of extending “temporary” protections indefinitely.
