Illegal aliens who attack America’s police officers could soon find themselves swiftly booted from U.S. soil, thanks to new legislation barreling through Congress—despite significant Democratic resistance.
On Thursday, the Republican-led House passed the Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act, a measure designed to ensure that any undocumented immigrant who assaults law enforcement faces mandatory detention and deportation. The bill cleared the chamber on a decisive 265-148 vote, with 54 Democrats joining Republicans in a rare bipartisan stand for police protection.
“There is no reason that an illegal alien who attacks our law enforcement should remain in our country; that shows zero respect for our rule of law or our institutions, and they will not be positive contributors to society,” declared Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J., who spearheaded the legislation.
Protecting Police—or Protecting Criminals?
The legislation creates a specific ground of inadmissibility for illegal immigrants accused of assaulting police, while ordering federal agencies to keep such suspects locked up until deportation proceedings are complete.
