The U.S. Senate entered the first day of a government shutdown on Wednesday with yet another failed vote on funding bills. Despite the urgency, lawmakers largely repeated the same moves that collapsed the day before.
Democrats in the Senate once again blocked the House-passed “Clean Resolution,” refusing to give Republicans the support needed to extend government funding. The measure required 60 votes to move forward but came up short, falling 55-45.
Interestingly, not every Democrat lined up with Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada, along with Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania and independent Sen. Angus King of Maine, sided with Republicans this time. Their votes highlighted growing cracks inside the Democratic ranks.
