The controversy began in February 2023, when Hamilton publicly opposed the World Surf League’s transgender participation policy.¹
She had signed a five-year sponsorship with Rip Curl in January 2022. But her refusal to go along with allowing biological males into women’s competitions made her persona non grata with company leadership.²
