According to NBC affiliate KNTV, beach conditions appeared relatively normal before the situation took a terrifying turn.
“The waves, I wouldn’t say they were tranquil, but they were what you’d expect, a normal cadence and intensity,” witness Scott Vander Dussen said.
“And then that just changed in a heartbeat. It caught a lot of people off-guard. Unfortunately, this young man was overwhelmed and swept out in just a moment’s time. I’m glad it ended the way it did. I’m certain if the lifeguards weren’t there, he wouldn’t have gone home that night,” Vander Dussen added.
Video from the rescue showed Ryder refusing to let go of the struggling child despite relentless waves crashing over both of them. Time after time, the ocean knocked them down and dragged them farther into the surf, yet the teenage lifeguard maintained what many described as an unbreakable grip on the boy.
Several men rushed into the water in an attempt to assist, but the strength of the surf forced them back toward shore before they could reach the pair.
Moments later, another lifeguard arrived and joined Ryder in the rescue. Working together, the two safely brought the exhausted child back to land.
The boy, believed to be around 10 years old, was examined by paramedics at the scene before being released to his family.
As video of the rescue spread online, Americans from across the country praised the teenager’s courage. Among those taking notice was Eric Trump, who shared his thoughts on social media.
“Give this 16-year-old lifeguard the highest civilian honor. This is truly the best of America! Well done!”
President Trump soon responded, announcing that Ryder would receive recognition for his heroic actions.
“We’re going to bring this heroic young man, and his family, into the White House with, perhaps, the boy he saved, to give him a High Civilian Honor. Very brave, he deserves it!”
The announcement was welcomed by countless supporters who applauded the president for recognizing acts of courage and selflessness rather than celebrity or politics.
As attention continued to grow, Ryder’s mother expressed heartfelt gratitude for the overwhelming support her son has received.
“I am blown away by the love, kindness, gratitude and respect you’re sending his way!” she said. “A few people have asked about a GoFundMe – but honestly he was just doing the job that he absolutely loves.”
Rather than accepting personal donations, Ryder’s family encouraged those inspired by his actions to give back to the next generation of lifesavers.
“Instead, she encouraged those wishing to support Ryder to donate to the Santa Cruz County Parks Department’s Junior Guards program, where she said Ryder and many of his fellow lifeguards trained before becoming old enough to serve,” according to Fox News.
The recommendation highlights the importance of investing in programs that prepare young people to protect others in life-threatening situations.
KNTV also reported that becoming a Santa Cruz lifeguard requires extensive preparation and rigorous instruction. While officials did not discuss Ryder’s individual training, the station noted that local lifeguards must complete at least 56 hours of lifeguard instruction, 24 hours of medical certification training, and more than 80 hours of marine safety training before earning the responsibility of protecting beachgoers.
The remarkable rescue has become a powerful reminder that true heroes are often ordinary young Americans willing to step forward when others are in danger. Ryder’s bravery under extraordinary circumstances not only saved a child’s life but also earned admiration from people across the political spectrum.
Now, with an invitation to the White House and a High Civilian Honor expected to be presented by President Trump, the 16-year-old lifeguard’s incredible act of courage is set to receive the national recognition many believe it deserves.
