Millions of American retirees could soon receive a welcome financial boost, but the latest Social Security increase also underscores a troubling reality facing older Americans: the cost of everyday living continues to put enormous pressure on household budgets.
The Social Security Administration announced Wednesday that monthly benefits are set to rise by 3.6% in 2027. The adjustment represents the largest annual cost-of-living increase in four years, offering additional income to retirees and other Americans who depend on the federal program.
For the average retired worker, the increase is expected to translate into approximately $75 more per month, or around $900 over the course of a year. While the additional money could help cover essential expenses, many seniors are still struggling to make their retirement savings stretch as grocery prices, medical bills and energy costs eat away at their purchasing power.
The adjustment will affect approximately 76 million Americans receiving Social Security benefits, including retirees, eligible survivors and people with disabilities.
